ECC Firewater Platygyra
Platygyra corals, commonly known as brain coral or maze coral, are popular among reef aquarium enthusiasts due to their unique appearance and relatively easy care requirements. Here are the essential care guidelines for maintaining healthy Platygyra corals in your aquarium.
Care Requirements
Lighting and Water Flow
- Lighting Moderate, 50-150 par (start on the low end)
- Water Flow: Moderate to low
Water Conditions
- Temperature 76-80 degree farenheit
- Calcium 400-450 ppm
- Alkalinity 8-10 dKH
- Magnesium. 1250-1350 ppm
- pH 8.1-8.4
- Salinity 1.024-1.026
- Nitrates 5-10 ppm
- Phosphates <0.07 ppm
Feeding
Platygyra corals are photosynthetic but benefit from supplemental feedings. Recommended foods include:
- Amino Acids
- Powdered foods such as Benepets and Reef Roids
- Phytoplankton and Zooplankton
- Mysis and Brine Shrimp
Regular target feeding a couple of times a week can enhance growth. It is recommended that you turn off water flow for 10-15 minutes during feeding for best results.
Growth and Placement
Platygyra have a moderate growth rate. Consideration should be given to placement as platygyra have aggressive sweeper tentacles that can sting other nearby corals. Placing them on the rock work low in the tank is recommended.
