Button Scoly-Ultra
Scolymia, also known as Homophyllia australis, is a popular large polyp stony (LPS) coral known for its vibrant colors and unique shapes. These corals are relatively easy to care for, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
Care Requirements
Lighting and Water Flow
- Lighting High, 75-150 par; Too much light can cause bleaching, but too little inhibits growth. Watch them closely to find the ideal light level.
- Water Flow: Low to moderate. It should be just high enough to prevent debris buildup and ensure the coral receives nutrients. Excessive flow can damage the coral.
Water Conditions
- Temperature 75-80 degree farenheit
- Calcium 400-450 ppm
- Alkalinity 8-12 dKH
- Magnesium. 1250-1350 ppm
- pH 8.0-8.4
- Salinity 1.023-1.025
- Nitrates 5-15 ppm
- Phosphates <0.10 ppm
Feeding
Scolymia corals are photosynthetic but benefit from supplemental feedings. Supplemental feedings encourages more vivid coloration and growth. Recommended foods include:
- Amino Acids
- Powdered foods such as Benepets and Reef Roids
- Phytoplankton and Zooplankton
- Mysis shrimp
- Minced seafood like scallops or squid
- Benepets LPS or Brightwell Reef Blizzard LP pellets
Regular target feeding every 2-3 days can enhance growth. It is recommended that you turn off water flow for 10-15 minutes during feeding for best results.
Growth and Placement
Scolymia corals grow slowly and remain as solitary polyps throughout their life. They prefer to be placed in lower areas of the tank, typically on sandbeds or stable rock structures, with low to moderate lighting and gentle water flow to thrive.
