Aussie Lobophyllia
Lobophyllia corals, also known as lobed brain corals or "Lobos," are popular in reef aquariums due to their vibrant colors and unique structures. They belong to the large polyp stony (LPS) coral group and require specific care to thrive.
Care Requirements
Lighting and Water Flow
- Lighting: Prefers moderate light (PAR 100-150).
- Water Flow: Moderate indirect water flow is ideal
Water Conditions
- Temperature: 75-82°F
- Salinity: 1.023 - 1.025
- pH: 8.1 - 8.4
- Alkalinity: 8-9 dKH
- Calcium: 400-450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm
- Nitrates: 5-10 ppm
- Phosphates: <0.10 ppm
Feeding
Lobophyllia corals are photosynthetic but benefit from supplemental feedings. Recommended foods include:
- Amino Acids
- Powdered foods such as Benepets and Reef Roids
- Phytoplankton and Zooplankton
- Mysis shrimp
Regular target feeding a couple of times a week can enhance growth. It is recommended that you turn off water flow for 10-15 minutes during feeding for best results.
Growth and Placement
Lobophyllia corals grow slowly and require stable water conditions, including proper calcium and alkalinity levels. They should be placed in moderate water flow and lighting, ideally on the substrate or lower in the tank to allow for expansion without tissue damage.
